Room 105

9:00 - 9:45 AM

NOTE: This session is based off the phenomenal work of Matt Leiser of DG58 who gave permission for me to adapt and build off his work.

--Thank you, Matt!

Augmented Reality (AR) allows users to explore a hidden, digital layer to the real world. Bring 2D materials to life by embedding video, photos, sounds, and animation.  This session will explore a variety of AR apps by providing a hands on experience and time to explore.  Once participants have had time to use the products, the session will conclude with educators sharing how they might use a specific AR app in their classroom.

What is Augmented Reality (AR)?

Examples of AR in Education

There are myriad ways other educators have used AR (especially Aurasma) in education. I've combed through a few sites and embedded a few videos and lists of ideas below.

Toy Car RC by Toywheel

"Toy Car allows you and your kids to experience an interactive simulation of driving a remote controlled (RC) car through the real world. You can get the most out of Toy Car by using the four (one per world) pre-made targets included in the app. The targets can be easily printed directly from the app using a Wi-Fi enabled printer or sent via email. No access to a printer? No problem. You can also designate your own targets by using your device’s camera to take photos of, for example, magazine covers, postcards or even your kids’ drawings. Once you’ve taken a photo for each world, just press the “play” button and point your device’s camera at one of the target images - now you’re ready to start driving! " --from iTunes Store

*Print off target tracks.

Setting Up a Channel in Aurasma

The easiest way to share your classroom's auras is through a public channel. Considering channels have to be 1) shared/found, 2) followed,  & 3) have the specific visual trigger to activate them, they are fairly safe for student identity. Thus creating public channels of content distribution may work with your school/district's privacy policy. DISCLAIMER: These comments are not legal advice and you should consult your district's privacy & student safety policy before assuming the risk.

Taking it Back

Now that you have 1) practical understanding, 2) examples, 3) and experience with AR apps, where could you use augmented reality in your classroom? Take a moment and visit the Padlet Wall (below) and add your ideas.
