Electronic Books

The self-publishing revolution has swept the world and Web 2.0 applications (like PBWiki) allow for us to easily collect, post, and share content.  This revolution coupled with the everyday citizens who take advantage of it in innovative ways brought Time to name YOU as 2006's Person of the Year.  The power to self-publish is truly in the hands of the storyteller and the resources below will get you there!

Please know, I am a teacher, school librarian, and proponent of tangible literature.  Electronic books or eBooks, however, offer several benefits and they just keep getting better!

  • Highlight passages
  • Make sticky notes
  • Look up words in the accompanying dictionary
  • "all of the most relevant, thought-provoking passages from the book listed on one web page, as in my own condensed version of just the best pieces
  • all of my notes and reflections attached to those individual notes
  • the ability to copy and paste all of those notes and highlights into Evernote which makes them searchable, editable, organizable, connectible and remixable
  • the ability to access my book notes and highlights from anywhere I have an Internet connection" (Richarson, 2010).

eBook Readers

As Craig Mod says in his Books in the Age of the iPad journal, I'm okay with the evolution of the book.  The self publishing revolution is in full swing and the ability to create dynamic, interactive literature is an affirming and engaging demonstration of

eBook Creation

The self-publishing revolution has swept the world and Web 2.0 applications (like PBWiki) allow for us to easily collect, post, and share content.  This revolution coupled with the everyday citizens who take advantage of it in innovative ways brought Time to name YOU as 2006's Person of the Year.  The power to self-publish is truly in the hands of the storyteller and the resources below will get you there!

Half the fun of electronic books is the ability to create them yourself about any topic!  The following web site and iOS applications will help your students create dynamic electronic literature that can easily be shared and edited.

Creating ePub Documents

Creating your electronic book using Apple's Pages '09 is the easiest and best solution for schools.  Several documents are available to guide, try, and show how to Pages can create dynamic ePub files to use on any iOS device.

Application
Cost & Description

FREE
"The YouTube for eBooks" from not-for-profit group.  Create eBooks with audio, pictures, and video integration through a web based interface and download the product to a variety of devices.

 Our Story

FREE
Use pictures from the photo album on your iDevice, add text and audio to create a digital book. See here for more info/directions.

StoryKit

FREE
From the International Children's Digital Library.

Create your own page-by-page story integrating pictures, text, and audio recorded content.  Download public domain stories with original artwork for your iOS devices.

Creative Book Builder

$3.99

Yeah, this is the one you want.  Not only does it include all the major players in the eBook revolution (yes, even VIDEO), but you can import content from Google Docs!  That's right.  Your students can be creating and embedding content into their existing Google document and then upload it to CBB via iPad to fine tune.  Publishing is then a breeze with email, Dropbox, (return to) Google Docs, or FTP it to a server.  BRILLIANT!

Book Creator

$4.99

One of the most tauted eBook creator tools from my ADE peers.  Now that Book Creator supports video, it is one of my top two ePub creation apps!  Updated to ePub 3 standards allows for additional integration features that Apple's Pages '09 can't offer.

eBook Journal

$4.99

This is a sleeper of an app created by Pinfolio LLC (see Google Chrome app to build ePub in browser).  While eBook Journal allows for similar features to Book Creator and Creative Book Builder, the option for color and styles are very slim.  The app will export as .epub or .mobi (Kindle), but only iOS devices will get all the multimedia features.

My Story

$1.99

Great EC-2 ePub creator with a variety of artistic tools to enhance your digital text.  Best part is exporting the digital text into a web version of the eBook.

eBook Creator

FREE or $3.99

Create your own eBook in six easy steps and control the layout.  Unfortunately, however, I'm unimpressed by the result.  Pictures cannot be flipped (portrait/landscape) and the resulting book using photos is stretched.  IF you plan out your book prior, import the photos/pictures, and then construct your layout and audio functions...this could be a solid contender.

Best on iOS = Pages '09

ePub books containing pictures, audio, and video are only readable through iOS devices, especially if published with Pages '09.

Best Multiplatform eReaders = ePubBud

Content created using ePubBud may be downloaded to a variety of eReaders, although their ability to use all media embedded depends on the end device.  If the user would like to read the interactive book in their browser, I recommend Apple's Safari or Mozilla's Firefox + EPUBReader plug-in.

Best Flash Embed = ISSUU

What do you do when students create an eBook, but don't have an eReader at home?  Create a Flash-based vesion of the book that you can read online and embed on a web site!  Read about this first grade class and how they shared their Butterfly Book with the world using ISSUU.

Shared Class Notes - Tom Donovan suggested that comments and highlighting a book from multiple devices or synching one account to multiple devices might become eReader best practice.  Mac & iOS Devices: Use the video to the right as an idea about copying and pasting into Evernote.  Kindle: "O ne special power of the synchronization feature is that the highlights and comments that are made in the text by an individual or a group are available for viewing online here after login. Sign in and look at the column to the right; there you will find a icons for “Highlights” and “Notes.” Students could be required to put their name at the end of each note they create, and the teacher could browse these notes easily without have the Kindles handy or any file transfer required" (WILLD, 2010, P ).  This idea of purchasing one book and sharing amongst many devices in the classroom/school/library, however, conflicts with many publisher's copyright and usage rights.
